Yes, some acne treatments have the potential to harm unborn babies, just stop using it if he told you to. I read about another popular one that has potentially harmful ingredients… can’t remember the name right now. It’s the one with the infomercials and that blonde girl spokesperson, it used to be that beatiful balck woman… sorry, brain fart.lol.

I wouldn’t stress about it, just be careful what products you use from now on.

Oh and ditch the Dr. If he was being rude and/or mean you need to find someone who you can trust while pregnant. You don’t need to put up with that jerk. Believe me, I’ve had my share of idiot Drs. Find someone you like hun. This is one of the most special and amazing times of your life, don’t let him ruin it for you. He sees babies come into the world every day, but you only get to do this once, maybe twice.

Don’t stress, just enjoy that precious baby of yours.

I also agree w/ AngelsMom. Tell him he’s being a jerk. Write him a letter if you need to.

here’s the deal: docs don’t want you to use any products (this is an active ingredient in many acne products on the market including Neutrogena) containing saciyllic acid because it has been known to cause birth defects when used frequently. this is the same reason they tell you not to take aspirin, because it contains amounts of this chemical. under NO circumstances should your doctor have scared you over this. it’s ok, trust me. I used products on my skin with this ingredient not knowing the risk until 20 weeks and my baby is completely FINE. just switch to a product that doesn’t contain the acid such as St. Ives or Burt’s Bees, which are still effective while being safe for use during pregnancy.

Usually it is safe, unless the product contains Retin A. Call the company and ask if it contains anything derived from retin a. It was not right of your doctor to upset you like that. I would actually find a different OB who will explain why you should stop, not upset you about it. Feel free to tell your doctor what you think of the way he treated you. You are his customer and he should be providing you with good customer service. Think about it, would you see a hair stylist that mean?! As a nurse I have experience with doctors and sometimes they just need to be put in their place! I’m sure your baby is fine!

Well number one you should find another doctor, he should never have made you cry. Number two call and ask them why… I’ve never heard of a topical ointment of any kind harming a child…. I think that you are ok how were you supposed to know? Calm down and find a new obgyn

no i asked my dr i used it before i switch to proactive ur alright =o) but ask just incase women are different good luck chica!

If he told you to stop, stop. However, it’s not worth fretting about at this point because there isn’t anything you can do. I really doubt anything is wrong. I was taking a pregnancy Cat. D med in early pregnancy - it only carries a 5% risk of birth defects and it’s in the highest category. My OB said my baby should be just fine. I am no longer taking it.

I don’t know about this one… I’ve never heard of that. It sounds like he is making a big deal out of nothing to get you upset. If your doctor makes you uncomfortable or upset, it’s early enough for you to switch.

P.S. My doc has never told me not to use anything on my face. I actually use the Neutrogena Acne Stress Control products myself and have a very healthy baby boy inside me You will be fine, don’t worry.

I would ask the doctor or call the company. Look at the back of the package and get their number. Sometimes acne medications can cause birth defects. I’m NOT saying anything will be wrong with your baby, most likely it’s just fine, but you need to get more info.
